Chapter 1
The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me
Invitation
Come, let us stand with Jesus in the synagogue at Nazareth. Feel the weight of the ancient scroll in His hands. Hear the hush of the crowd as He unrolls it to the prophecy of Isaiah. And listen, as He speaks the words that define His mission and ours: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me…” (Luke 4:18). This is not merely a statement of anointing; it is a declaration of allegiance. It is the Son’s perfect submission to the sovereign Spirit. And it is our invitation to the same.
What This Means
The phrase “The Spirit of the Lord” (Ruach Adonai) appears throughout Scripture to signify God’s active, sovereign power in the world. It is the Spirit in His kingly authority, commissioning and empowering His chosen vessels for His divine purposes. When this Spirit rests upon someone, it is not a casual visitation; it is a royal commissioning. It is a claim of ownership. It is a call to a divine assignment.
How It Looks Today
Today, the Spirit of the Lord rests upon every believer. This is not a metaphor. It is a profound reality. It means that you have been set apart, anointed, and empowered for a specific purpose in God’s kingdom. It looks like the single mother who, filled with the Spirit, raises her children in the fear of the Lord. It looks like the businessman who, under the Spirit’s lordship, conducts his affairs with integrity and justice. It looks like you, stepping out in faith to do the very thing God has called you to do, knowing that His sovereign authority goes with you.
Gentle Word Study
Adonai (Hebrew): Lord, Master, Sovereign Ruler. When paired with Ruach (Spirit), it emphasizes the Holy Spirit’s absolute authority and His right to rule over our lives.
Common Stumbles & Guidance
We often treat the anointing as a tool for our own use, rather than a sign of our submission to the Spirit’s lordship. We want the power without the price, the anointing without the allegiance. The correction is simple but profound: seek the Lord, not just His power. Surrender to the King, and the kingdom’s power will flow through you naturally.
10 PRAYER POINTS
Lord, reveal to me what it truly means that Your Spirit is upon me.
I surrender my plans and ambitions to Your sovereign will, Ruach Adonai.
Anoint me afresh for the specific assignment You have for my life.
Forgive me for seeking Your power more than Your Person.
I declare that the Spirit of the Lord is upon me to bring good news to the poor.
I declare that the Spirit of the Lord is upon me to bind up the brokenhearted.
I declare that the Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim freedom for the captives.
Let Your sovereign authority flow through me in every area of my life.
I bow my knee to You, Holy Spirit, as my Lord and my King.
Use me for Your glory, according to Your perfect plan.
Exercise (5–10 min)
Find a quiet place. Close your eyes and repeat the phrase, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” With each repetition, allow the reality of those words to sink deeper into your heart. Feel the weight of His presence, the honor of His anointing, and the security of His sovereign authority over your life.
Task (This Week)
Identify one area of your life where you have been operating in your own strength. Consciously surrender that area to the lordship of the Holy Spirit. Before making any decisions in that area, pause and ask, “Spirit of the Lord, what is Your will?”
Affirmation
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. I am anointed and appointed by the King. I walk in His authority and power. My life is submitted to His sovereign will. I am a vessel for His glory in the earth.
