Chapter 1
The Spirit of Counsel Explained
Invitation
Come, stand with me in the courts of heaven. The prophet Isaiah is given a vision of the coming Messiah, and upon Him rests the sevenfold Spirit of God. One of these is the “Spirit of counsel” (Ruach Etsah). This is the same Spirit who is now given to us. He is the Wonderful Counselor, the one who has perfect insight into every situation and who gives perfect advice every time. He is the ultimate life coach, the divine strategist, the one who knows the way forward when we are lost in the fog.
What This Means
The Spirit of Counsel (Ruach Etsah) is the third of the sevenfold expressions of the Holy Spirit from Isaiah 11:2. The Hebrew word Etsah means “counsel,” “advice,” “plan,” or “strategy.” The Spirit of Counsel is the Holy Spirit in His role as our divine advisor and strategist. He doesn’t just give us information; He gives us customized, practical, step-by-step guidance for our specific situations. He is the one who helps us to make wise decisions, to navigate complex relationships, and to develop effective strategies for our lives and ministries.
How It Looks Today
Today, the Spirit of Counsel looks like the business owner who, in a time of prayer, receives a creative idea that turns their struggling company around. It’s the parent who, at a loss for how to deal with a rebellious child, is given a specific word of wisdom that unlocks the child’s heart. It’s the pastor who, facing a major church decision, receives a clear sense of direction after a season of waiting on the Lord. It is the peace and confidence that comes from knowing that you are not making decisions alone, but in partnership with a divine Counselor.
Gentle Word Study
Etsah (Hebrew): Counsel, plan, purpose, advice. It carries the idea of a well-thought-out strategy. God’s counsel stands forever (Psalm 33:11).
Common Stumbles & Guidance
Our stumble is to lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). We make decisions based on our limited experience, our fluctuating emotions, or the advice of the world. We ask God to bless our plans, rather than asking Him for His plans. The guidance is to cultivate a lifestyle of dependence on the Spirit of Counsel. Before making any significant decision, create space to listen. Bring your options before Him. Ask Him for His etsah. And then, be willing to obey, even if His counsel doesn’t make sense to your natural mind.
10 PRAYER POINTS
Spirit of Counsel, I acknowledge my need for Your divine guidance.
Forgive me for leaning on my own understanding and for ignoring Your voice.
I consecrate my decision-making process to You.
I ask for a fresh infilling of the Ruach Etsah.
Be my Wonderful Counselor in every area of my life.
Give me Your heavenly strategies for my family, my finances, and my future.
Let me not just ask You to bless my plans, but give me Your plans.
I choose to trust Your counsel, even when I don’t understand it.
Let my life be a testimony to the wisdom of Your guidance.
Thank You for being my ever-present and all-wise Counselor.
Exercise (5–10 min)
Think of one decision you are currently facing. It could be big or small. Write down the different options you are considering. Then, one by one, bring each option before the Lord in prayer. As you hold each option up to Him, pay attention to the inner witness of the Spirit. Is there a sense of peace, of rightness, of life? Is there a sense of unease, of striving, of a check in your spirit? This is the beginning of learning to discern the counsel of the Lord.
Task (This Week)
For one week, commit to not making any non-essential decisions without first pausing to ask for the Spirit’s counsel. This could be as simple as asking, “Holy Spirit, which route should I take to work today?” or “How should I respond to this email?” This practice will train you to live in a state of constant, conversational dependence on your divine Counselor.
Affirmation
I have a Wonderful Counselor. The Spirit of Counsel guides me into all truth. I make wise, Spirit-led decisions. I have the mind of Christ and access to the strategies of heaven. My life is a testament to the goodness of God’s guidance.
