Chapter 1
The God Who Speaks – The Foundation of Hearing
Before we can learn to hear God’s voice, we must first believe that He is a God who speaks. This is the foundation of everything else. If you do not believe that God speaks, you will not be listening for His voice. If you do not believe that He wants to communicate with you, you will not be open to hearing from Him.
1.1 God’s Desire to Communicate
From the very beginning, God has been a communicating God. He spoke the universe into existence. He spoke to Adam and Eve in the garden. He spoke to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He spoke to Moses, to David, to the prophets. The Bible is a record of God’s communication with humanity.
But God’s desire to communicate did not end with the Bible. He continues to speak to His people today. He speaks to us through His Word, through His creation, through His circumstances, through His people, and through the still, small voice of His Spirit in our hearts. God is not a distant, silent God. He is a God who is intimately involved in our lives, a God who desires to speak to us, to guide us, to encourage us, to correct us, to love us.
1.2 The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the primary way that God speaks to us today. Jesus said, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit is the voice of God in the world. He is the one who reveals truth to us, who convicts us of sin, who guides us into all righteousness, who speaks to us in the depths of our hearts.
When you become a Christian, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. He becomes your constant companion, your guide, your counselor, your friend. He is always with you, always speaking to you, always leading you. The question is not whether God is speaking. The question is whether you are listening.
1.3 The Importance of Faith
Hearing God’s voice requires faith. You must believe that God is speaking, even when you do not hear His voice clearly. You must believe that He wants to communicate with you, even when you feel distant from Him. You must believe that He is a good God who has good plans for your life, even when your circumstances are difficult.
Faith is the foundation of hearing God’s voice. Without faith, you will be filled with doubt and unbelief. You will question whether you are really hearing from God. You will be afraid to step out in obedience. But with faith, you can be confident that God is speaking, that He is leading you, and that He will be with you every step of the way.
